Sergeant York
"Sergeant York" 1941 is a biopic about the life of Alvin York, the most decorated U.S. soldier of the First World War was directed by Howard Hawks and was the highest grossing film of the year.The film was adapted by Harry Chandlee, Abem Finkel, John Huston, Howard Koch and Sam Cowan (uncredited) Alvin York's diary as edited by Tom Skeyhill. The Royal York was against the idea of making a film about their experiences, but relented when WWII broke out, with the proviso that game him.Cooper Gary Cooper won the Oscar for best actor for his performance.The film also won for Best Editing and was nominated in nine categories, including best picture, director (Hawks), supporting actor (Walter Brennan) and Supporting Actress (Margaret Wycherly).The American Film Institute ranked 57 in the film of its 100 most inspiring movies. Alvin York is also rated 35 in its list of the 50 heroes of cinema in America 2008 “Sergeant York ” was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry of the Library of Congress “culturally, historically or aesthetically singnificant”
